SENSYN ROBOTICS, Inc., in collaboration with Chubu Electric Power Grid Co.,Inc., has conducted development research on improving operational efficiency of power transmission facilities, expanding the application of automatic inspection technology for power transmission facilities to large steel towers and developing automatic inspection technology for power transmission facilities that automatically tracks power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines).

Based on this technology, software will be developed and used in the inspection of power transmission facilities owned by Chubu Electric Power Grid.

The two companies have established technologies specialized for automatic inspection of power transmission facilities using drones by automatically generating flight routes and shooting actions.

With the addition of the automatic tracking function for power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines), it is no longer necessary to operate the aircraft or camera during automatic inspection flights, making it possible for workers without special knowledge of drones to perform power transmission line inspection work more easily.
Since this technology uses common drones available in the market, it pushes automatic flights, which until now have been highly experimental in nature, such as using specialized sensors, to a practical level, and is expected to improve the efficiency of power transmission facility inspection work. In addition, the new system can now also inspect large facilities such as ultra-high-voltage transmission lines, thereby expanding the scope of inspections.

Development Results

Automatic inspection flights for large transmission facilities (e.g., extra-high-voltage transmission lines)

In addition to standard transmission facilities, automatic inspection flights can now be used for large transmission facilities (e.g., extra-high-voltage transmission lines).
By combining SENSYN CORE, a work automation platform owned by SENSYN Robotics, and automatic inspection technology for power transmission facilities jointly developed using Chubu Electric Power Grid's power transmission facility inspection know-how, the system can automatically inspect steel towers (supports and stones) and power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines) in a single operation. (overhead ground lines and power lines).
In addition to single-conductor power lines, the system can now also inspect multi-conductor power lines, making it possible to improve the efficiency of power line inspection work in more scenarios.

Establishment of technology to automatically detect and acquire high-resolution images of power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines)

Advanced drone piloting and camera operation technologies have been required to capture images of power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines) at a resolution sufficient to conduct precise inspections while maintaining a safe separation between the lines. The two companies have established technology to automatically generate flight routes and camera actions along the sagging power transmission lines (overhead ground lines and power lines), and now, with the addition of an automatic power transmission line (overhead ground lines and power lines) tracking function, power transmission facility inspection work can be performed accurately and safely regardless of the skill of the operator. The new system can now perform power transmission facility inspections with high accuracy and safety, regardless of the skills of the operator.
The new system does not use any special sensors, but uses a general-purpose airframe and camera that are generally available on the market, enabling flexible operation independent of the manufacturer or model.

We will continue to conduct R&D to further reduce labor and automate power transmission facility inspections through drone control using AI, image analysis, and other advanced technologies.

About SENSYN ROBOTICS

Our mission is to evolve what is considered “commonplace” in society with the power of robotics. It is under this mission that we have continued to take on pressing challenges in regards to specific social issues in various fields focused on facility inspections, disaster response, and security and surveillance by achieving the full automation of work with the power of robotics since our establishment in October 2015.
