Tokyo, Japan - July 19 , 2024 -SENSYN ROBOTICS Inc. and TAKENAKA CORPORATION jointly conducted a demonstration experiment aiming to establish autonomous drone flight technology in urban areas, as part of the "Project PLATEAU*1" led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

This initiative was also selected for the “Project PLATEAU” “Use Case Development Work for the Promotion of Architecture and Urban DX” in FY2024, and SENSYN ROBOTICS Inc. will continue to participate in this project. In the Yumeshima area, where construction of the Kansai Expo site is underway, SENSYN ROBOTICS Inc. plans to participate in a demonstration experiment using autonomous drone flight to transport materials, aiming to improve productivity and reduce manpower at construction sites.

Approach: Autonomous drone flight in an urban high-rise building valley

Normally, autonomous drone flight is performed by locating the position using GPS, but in valleys between high-rise buildings where GPS reception is poor, it is difficult to ensure flight stability. SENSYN ROBOTICS Inc. and TAKENAKA CORPORATION have therefore installed two functions in the drone in addition to the conventional GPS: LiDAR*2 , which measures the distance to the building, and VIO*3 , which calculates the amount of movement, to achieve redundant self-position estimation. When the drone flies in areas where GPS reception is poor, such as in valleys between high-rise buildings, it flies using a point cloud map created from a 3D city model and BIM. In areas where positioning accuracy is degraded by LiDAR, such as around high-rise buildings with windows of the same shape, positioning accuracy is ensured by VIO's image judgment. In the verification experiment, the drone flew autonomously in an area lined with high-rise buildings in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, using this newly developed system, flying at a high altitude along the buildings and setting a route to land inside the buildings. The results of the experiment confirmed that the drone can fly accurately and safely between the interior and exterior of buildings, even in the valleys between high-rise buildings.

*1 Project PLATEAU: A project promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to develop, utilize and open data of 3D urban models. It aims to enable anyone to freely extract and utilize urban data.

*2 LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging): Technology to measure the distance to an object and the shape of the object by using reflected light from an irradiating laser.

*3 VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry): A technology that calculates the amount of movement of a drone by capturing changes in continuously acquired camera images.
