SENSYN ROBOTICS, Inc. and Sun Frontier Fudousan Co., Ltd. announce that they have begun developing software to streamline drone-based wall surface inspections as a joint project following their capital and business alliance for aggressive digital transformation (DX) aimed at improving productivity and changing work styles.

Market Forecasts and Future Outlook

The drone inspection market is expected to expand dramatically with the introduction of a licensing system for drone operations by the end of FY2022. The two companies anticipate that many businesses will enter the drone-based building inspection market and that drone wall inspections will become commonplace in society. As software that can be widely used by such businesses, the two companies are considering selling this software externally from April 2022, and are currently conducting ongoing marketing activities in preparation for the service launch.

Background of Development

Recently, drone-based building inspections have been attracting attention, and building owners (or construction companies) are increasingly adopting drones as a new inspection method that does not require scaffolding or gondolas. While the appeal of drone-based wall surface inspection (hereinafter referred to as "wall surface inspection") is that it is inexpensive and reduces the burden on facility users compared to conventional inspection methods, it also requires an enormous amount of time to determine abnormalities in the vast amount of image data captured after inspection, identify the areas photographed, analyze abnormal areas, and prepare a report. In many cases, some operators have abandoned their entry into the business due to the bottleneck of report preparation. Against this backdrop, Sun Frontier Fudousan is promoting drone photography of wall surfaces, mainly at its own properties, by leveraging its expertise in managing more than 400 properties in the central Tokyo area. By sequentially photographing exterior wall tiles, sprayed mortar, and other wall surfaces, the company is accumulating wall surface data and working with SENSYN ROBOTICS to develop an AI that can automatically identify abnormalities in wall surfaces (tile cracks, efflorescence, missing tiles, etc.) and develop software to automate the preparation of investigation reports. We are currently developing software to generate AI that can automatically identify abnormalities in wall surfaces and automate investigation reports. In the future, we plan to develop the software to a level that can detect the width of cracks.

Reduction of Work Items

In the building survey report preparation phase after photography, report specifications vary depending on the client's survey objectives and requests. In the case of surveys for large-scale repair work on large buildings, some reports can be several hundred pages long, requiring an enormous amount of man-hours for visual inspection and manual work. In order to significantly reduce these tasks, we have developed software that can reduce work items, manage property folders, and store drawings in the cloud all at once through automatic identification by AI, aiming for a 60% reduction in work items. In the future, we aim to further reduce work items by improving the accuracy of AI.

About SENSYN ROBOTICS

Our mission is to evolve what is considered “commonplace” in society with the power of robotics. It is under this mission that we have continued to take on pressing challenges in regards to specific social issues in various fields focused on facility inspections, disaster response, and security and surveillance by achieving the full automation of work with the power of robotics since our establishment in October 2015.
