SENSYN ROBOTICS, Inc. (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / President: Takuya Kitamura; hereinafter “SENSYN ROBOTICS”), a company which is aiming to fully automate operations with drones focused on the areas of facility inspections, disaster countermeasures and security, has conducted a functional verification of safety patrols and civil surveying using the "SENSYN DRONE HUB" at the construction site of Fujita Corporation (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoji Okumura; hereinafter referred to as "Fujita").

Fujita has been promoting the latest drone surveying and IoT heavy machinery and earthworks to make the entire process visible.

In February 2019, Fujita and SENSYN ROBOTICS will continue their joint verification experiment, and this time, they have newly verified the functions required for safety patrols and civil surveying at construction sites.

Verification Content

This demonstration experiment was conducted at the Hokuriku Shinkansen train base construction site in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, to verify whether the "SENSYN DRONE HUB" can meet the requirements for automatic drone operation at the construction site and to verify its functions in the fields of safety patrols and civil surveying.

(1) Safety patrols
Purpose: To confirm safety at construction sites and understand the progress of construction
Content: Verification of whether the "SENSYN DRONE HUB" and "SENSYN DC" can be linked to enable real-time monitoring of construction sites from remote locations.

A video transmission system was used to relay images between two bases, one at the construction site of a vehicle base (Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture) and the other at Fujita's head office (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo), to verify the video quality of the connection between multiple bases.

(2) Civil engineering surveying
Purpose: Automation of surveying work by "SENSYN DRONE HUB".
Description: Utilizing the scheduling and data link functions of the SENSYN DRONE HUB, we tested whether it is possible to fully automate the series of operations from data acquisition through drone flight to storage in the cloud.

Verification Results

(1) Safety patrols
A video transmission system was used to relay images between two bases, one at the construction site of the vehicle base and the other at Fujita's head office, to verify the quality of the images during the connection between the bases. We tested the ability to suspend and resume camera operation and automatic navigation from a remote location, assuming actual safety patrol operations, and confirmed that the system has enough functions to perform primary screening in security.

Verify whether the rescuer who needs to be rescued can be identified at the work site.
We confirmed that it has video quality that a person who has fallen can recognize.

(2) Civil engineering surveying
We also verified the scheduling function (flight mission reservation function) provided by the SENSYN DRONE HUB, and confirmed that the drone would automatically take off from the platform at the appointed time, fly exactly as the route specified in the system in advance, and then make a fully automatic and precise automatic landing.

In addition, data acquired during scheduled flights is automatically uploaded from the aircraft and managed centrally in the cloud. Create ortho images* based on photographed data.

We were able to confirm that the system has the necessary functions for unmanned operation of civil surveying operations.

*Orso image...an aerial photograph converted to an image that is displayed at the correct size and position without slanting as if seen from above, just like a map, without the misalignment of the image on the photograph. Since ortho images have the correct shape and position of the captured image, it is possible to accurately measure position, area, distance, etc. on the image in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), etc., and can be superimposed on map data, etc.

Outlook for the future

By using the SENSYN DRONE HUB, which is capable of automatically performing everything from take-off and landing to filming, data transfer, and analysis, the company will develop a solution that will contribute to improving the efficiency and sophistication of these tasks, eliminating the labor shortage that is a social issue, and ensuring the safety of workers.

Especially for surveying work required for progress management, aerial photogrammetry using drones can reduce the cost by 70% and the process by 60% compared to conventional ground-based optical wave surveying (according to our survey). In the future, we will update "SENSYN DRONE HUB" for high-precision photogrammetry and develop it for full automation of construction progress management.

In this verification experiment, the flight was verified within visual range of the operator, and it was confirmed that all missions from take-off to landing could be carried out without the intervention of workers, confirming that the drone has the necessary functions for unmanned operation.

We plan to continue measuring and testing the effectiveness of the system in order to achieve fully automated operation in the future.

Outline of the demonstration experiment

Date and time: December 16 - December 20, 2019
Location: Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture (Tsuruga Rail Yard construction site)
Objective: To verify whether the SENSYN DRONE HUB can meet the requirements for automatic drone operation at construction sites in the field of safety patrols and civil surveying.

About SENSYN DRONE HUB

SENSYN DRONE HUB is a system that promotes the automation of operations. It has integrated control software and operation applications in addition to bases (drone ports) to support drones, automatic takeoff and landing, and automatic charging.

About SENSYN ROBOTICS

Our mission is to evolve what is considered “commonplace” in society with the power of robotics. It is under this mission that we have continued to take on pressing challenges in regards to specific social issues in various fields focused on facility inspections, disaster response, and security and surveillance by achieving the full automation of work with the power of robotics since our establishment in October 2015.
